Canadian disability support is less a single program than a small archipelago — and one approval is the bridge to most of it. If you or a family member is navigating this system, the order you do things in matters as much as the things themselves.
Step one: the Disability Tax Credit
The DTC is a non-refundable tax credit certified on Form T2201, with your medical practitioner describing how a severe and prolonged impairment affects basic activities of daily living — walking, feeding, dressing, mental functions, and others — or whether you require life-sustaining therapy. It is deliberately not about the diagnosis; it is about function.
On its own, the credit reduces taxes owing (and unused portions can transfer to a supporting family member). But its larger value is what it unlocks: the Canada Disability Benefit, the Registered Disability Savings Plan with its grants and bonds, and the Child Disability Benefit for parents. No DTC approval, no access — which makes it the correct first application, even in a year when you owe no tax.
Step two: the Canada Disability Benefit
The CDB is the federal monthly payment for working-age adults with disabilities: up to $204.20 a month for July 2026 to June 2027, for people aged 18 to 64 who hold DTC approval, are Canadian residents, file a tax return, and fall under the income thresholds — the benefit reduces as family income rises and phases out entirely at higher incomes. It is non-taxable, and unlike the credits on this page, you must apply for it; approval for the DTC does not start it automatically.
How the pieces stack
A realistic map for a working-age adult: CPP disability if you have the contributions and cannot work at all; the CDB as a monthly top-up layered on top; the DTC reducing taxes and holding the door open; an RDSP building long-term savings with federal grants of up to $3,500 a year and bonds of up to $1,000 a year for lower incomes; and provincial disability assistance underneath it all, with rules that vary by province. Each program has its own test, and passing one never guarantees another — but the DTC is where the sequence starts.
